Suvendu Adhikari set to lead Bengal as next CM

Agartala, May 9: In a landmark political development, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has been unanimously chosen to head the new government in West Bengal after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive mandate in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

The announcement was made on Friday during a crucial meeting of the newly elected BJP legislators held in Kolkata in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The party formally elected Adhikari as the leader of its legislature party to assume office as the state’s next Chief Minister.

With this victory, the BJP is set to form its first government in West Bengal since Independence, ending years of Trinamool Congress dominance in the state’s political landscape. Party sources said the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday morning at the historic Brigade Parade Ground.

The event is expected to witness the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union Ministers including Amit Shah, Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states and senior party leaders from across the country.

During the legislature party meeting, multiple proposals were reportedly submitted supporting Adhikari’s candidature, with no alternative name suggested by any member. Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah said the party had reached a unanimous decision after consultations with the elected representatives.

Following the meeting, Adhikari met Governor R. N. Ravi and formally staked claim to form the new government. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya accompanied him during the meeting with the Governor at Raj Bhavan. The party submitted a letter of support signed by all 207 newly elected BJP legislators.

Adhikari registered victories from both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly constituencies in the elections. In Bhabanipur, he defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a significant margin, marking one of the most closely watched contests of the election.

Once sworn in, Suvendu Adhikari will become the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal. His appointment ended  Mamata Banerjee’s uninterrupted tenure that began in 2011 after the fall of the Left Front government.

Meanwhile, the Governor has already dissolved the outgoing Assembly, formally bringing the previous Trinamool Congress-led administration to an end ahead of the formation of the new government. Earlier, TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee refused to resign as the Chief Minister.

The rise of Suvendu Adhikari from the streets of Nandigram to the chair of Chief Minister marks one of the most emotional chapters in Bengal’s political history. For millions of BJP supporters across West Bengal, this is not just a political victory — it is the triumph of perseverance, sacrifice and an unyielding fight against years of political dominance.

Adhikari’s journey reflects the aspirations of countless people who longed for change. His victory symbolizes the voice of ordinary workers, youth and families who believed that Bengal deserved a new direction.

The defeat of Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur has added even greater emotional significance to this transition of power. Supporters see it as a historic turning point — the end of an era and the beginning of a new political chapter under BJP leadership.

As Bengal prepares to witness its first BJP-led government since Independence, emotions are running high across the state. For many, Suvendu Adhikari’s swearing-in is not merely a ceremony; it is the realization of a dream that once seemed impossible.
