Swachh Survekshan: Khowai ‘Promising Swachh Shehar’ in Tripura

Tripura's Khowai town has clinched the prestigious title of ‘Promising Swachh Shehar’ under the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 awards.

At a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the recognition was conferred in the august presence of President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

Minister Tinku Roy received the award on behalf of the state, handed over by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Hailing the achievement, Minister Roy said the honour belongs to the dedicated citizens of Khowai, whose consistent efforts and active participation in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan have transformed the town.

In a social media post, he described the award as a “milestone for Tripura” and praised Khowai’s strides toward becoming a “clean, green, and sustainable” urban space.

“This recognition reflects the growing momentum of civic progress in Tripura,” Roy added, urging other towns in the state to follow Khowai’s example.

Officials noted that the accolade places Khowai among a select group of 34 cities nationwide that were identified as top performers under the “One City, One Award” criterion. Each of these cities demonstrated exceptional improvement in sanitation, waste management, and public engagement.

The Swachh Survekshan is conducted annually by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to assess and reward cities for their performance in cleanliness, hygiene, and urban civic standards.

This latest recognition is not only a proud moment for Khowai but also a significant step forward in Tripura’s journey toward inclusive and sustainable urban development.
