Teacher beaten to death over WhatsApp text, one arrested

Udaipur, Aug 11: In a bizarre incident, a teacher was beaten to death allegedly over misinterpretation of a WhatsApp message.
The deceased- Abhijit Dey was a resident of Udaipur in Gomati district of Tripura and was engaged in home tution.
He was hospitalized after being beaten by family members of a girl student. He later succumbed to injuries during treatment in the hospital on Saturday last.
The girl student had asked Dey, the home tutor, to translate a word to English. The teacher had sent the meaning of the word through a WhatsApp message which was later 'misinterpreted', the deceased'ws wife alleged.
Shortly afterward, he was taken to the student's home, where he was beaten by the student's father and several others in front of his wife on August 8 last.
Following the attack, the family members of the student also filed a case against the teacher at the local Women Police Station, leading to his arrest.
Later that same day, due to his deteriorating health, he was admitted to Gomati district hospital.
But, police had produced him before the court on the next day. In the court, Dey started vomiting blood following which he was again taken to Gomati district hospital and later transferred to GBP Hospital, where he passed away on August 10.
The teacher's death came as a shock for the people in Udaipur. A group of teachers and students organized a protest rally, carrying the dead body from hospital to his home.
Minister Pranajit Singha Roy met the bereaved family. He also assured justice.
Local police registered a case against four individuals and made one arrest till the last information came in.
