The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the West Tripura administration to strictly enforce rules against noise pollution, particularly during religious festivities and public gatherings.
The directive came after complaints of excessive noise and obstruction of police duties during Ganesh Puja immersion near Agartala City Center. Taking note of the matter, THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh held discussions with District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar and Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) Member Secretary Dr. Bishu Kumar on Tuesday.
The Commission stressed that violators of sound regulations and firecracker rules will face legal consequences. It further instructed that no sound system should be used within 100 meters of hospitals such as IGM, GBP, AGMC, and other healthcare facilities in West Tripura, and that noise levels must not exceed 75 dB(A).
The District Magistrate has scheduled a meeting on September 7 with stakeholders, including Puja organizers and club representatives, to chalk out preventive measures. The TSPCB also submitted existing guidelines on idol immersion, use of sound systems, and firecrackers, while noting repeated violations by several organizations.
The THRC emphasized total prohibition of firecrackers on public roads during processions and called for stronger monitoring. The next hearing on the matter is slated for September 9.
