Sabroom, Sept 6: Three people were killed and three others, including two young women, were critically injured in a horrific motorcycle accident in Tripura’ Sabroom on Sunday. 

The accident claimed lives at Ramgua area near Dasharath Deb Memorial School under Sabroom sub-division.

The accident occurred on the National Highway-- two motorcycles collided head-on. The motorcycles involved were bearing registration numbers TR08-G-6641 and TR08-H-4567.

Eyewitnesses claimed that both motorcycles were travelling at high speed when they suddenly collided. The impact was so severe that both bikes were badly mangled, while the riders and pillion passengers were thrown onto the road.

Local residents rushed to the spot immediately after the accident and rescued the injured before taking them to the Kalacherra Primary Health Centre. Doctors at the health centre declared three of them brought dead.

Police identified the deceased as Mukesh Tripura, Sunny Dewan Tripura and Sanjib Tripura. Sunny and Sanjib were residents of Garifa, while Mukesh was from the Baishnabpur area.

Among the injured, Prahar Tripura has been identified. The identities of the other two injured women were initially not known. Given their critical condition, they were referred to Shantirbazar District Hospital for advanced treatment.

Later, one of the injured women was identified as Neela Mog, a Class XI student of Chalitabanukul Class XII School. She is currently undergoing treatment.

On receiving information about the accident, Sabroom Sub-Divisional Police Officer Diptanu Biswas and Manubazar police station Officer-in-Charge Sanjib Debbarma reached the spot and took steps to bring the situation under control. Additional District Police Officer Suman Majumdar also arrived from Belonia.

Police subsequently launched an investigation into the accident. 

Speaking to reporters at the Kalachhara health centre later in the evening, SDPO Diptanu Biswas said preliminary findings suggested that over-speeding was responsible for the fatal crash.

He also pointed out that several speed-breaker drums had been placed along the accident-prone stretch to control vehicle speeds. However, local residents allegedly remove the drums on a regular basis.
