Tension ran high at Khowai Chowmuhani under Hezamara block on Saturday after a confrontation between Tipra Motha supporters and a group of surrendered militants erupted, leaving several people injured.

The incident occurred when a Tipra Motha candidate and his supporters were returning after submitting nomination for the upcoming Village Committee elections. According to party sources, their vehicles reached an area where a group of returnees was staging a road blockade.

The situation reportedly turned tense after the Motha supporters were asked not to proceed through the blocked stretch and instead use an alternative route. An exchange of words followed, eventually escalating into a physical confrontation between the two groups.

Tipra Motha alleged that its candidate and supporters came under attack during the incident. Police sources, however, said the confrontation began after some members of the returnees’ group allegedly used obscene language against women supporters of the party who were travelling inside the vehicle.

The verbal altercation soon developed into a clash, during which several people from both sides sustained injuries. Some of the surrendered militants were also reportedly injured.
The injured were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Amid the confrontation, several people reportedly fled the area in panic.

Sources said Alindra Debbarma, who was among those leading the road blockade, was escorted away from the spot by his personal security guard as the situation deteriorated.

Security personnel intervened promptly and managed to bring the situation under control. Police were subsequently deployed in the area to prevent any further escalation.
