Tipra Motha Party (TMP) is preparing to withdraw support from the government and Lok Sabha’s BJP MP from East Tripura Kriti Devi Singh is ready to resign—this statement of Ranjit Debbarma, an MLA of the TMP, in a press conference stormed Tripura’s political circle on Saturday.
Debbarma had cited the Central Government’s inaction on key demands meant for Janajati welfare.
The statement sparked serious reaction among the people. Finally, Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma tactfully ignored the MLA’s comment and termed it as ‘expression of growing public frustration’.
“I wasn’t aware of what our MLA said. I’ll speak to him directly. I’ve also spoken to the Chief Minister. It’s been 18 months since the tripartite agreement was signed in Delhi, and people in the villages are genuinely feeling neglected. We must ensure the agreement is implemented. The Chief Minister assured us he will raise the issue with the Centre, and we should respect his word,” the TMP founder informed the media.
He further said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had given Tipra Motha leaders an appointment later this month.
Meanwhile, addressing the press conference, MLA Ranjit Debbarma raised several long-standing concerns, including the non-implementation of the accord, the delay in conducting Village Committee elections, unresolved land rights issues, and the pending passage of the 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill concerning Sixth Schedule areas. He also voiced dissatisfaction over the cabinet representation, noting that only two Tipra Motha MLAs had been given ministerial roles—one of them without independent charge.
He further announced that Tipra Motha leaders would meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 20 to make a final appeal before deciding on their next course of action. “Our supremo, Maharaja, will leave for Delhi on July 9, and I will be accompanying him,” he added.
