Tripura: 3 Left leaders surrender following SC’s order

Agartala, Mar 01: Three Left leaders, previously convicted in connection with an incident from 2015, surrendered before a court in Belonia on Saturday, adhering to a directive from the Supreme Court.
The individuals—Tapas Dutta, Babul Debnath, and Trilokesh Sinha— had been found guilty of ransacking court complex in Belonia during a nationwide protest organized by five Left organizations.
The court of the First Class Judicial Magistrate had sentenced them to two years of imprisonment under Section 353 of the IPC and an additional two-month jail term under Section 447 of the IPC.
Subsequent appeals to the District Court and the Tripura High Court resulted in the upholding of the verdict. Seeking further legal recourse, the trio had approached the Supreme Court.
Following recent proceedings, the Apex Court instructed them to surrender, leading to their appearance before the Belonia court. The leaders have now been placed under judicial custody.
The next Supreme Court hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 18.
The case pertains to an event on September 2, 2015, when a nationwide bandh was being observed. Reports suggest that during the bandh, the picketers led by the three Left leaders had entered the court premises, causing disruptions.
Allegations were made regarding threats delivered to the then District and Sessions Judge.
