Tripura Assembly gets new Speaker, CM congratulates

Agartala, Mar 18: The Tripura Legislative Assembly on Wednesday unanimously elected senior BJP legislator Rampada Jamatia as its new Speaker.

The Speaker’s post had remained unoccupied since December last year following the passing of former Speaker Biswabandhu Sen.

Jamatia’s unanimous selection witnessed rare political unity, with members from both the ruling side and the opposition backing his candidature. Soon after the announcement, congratulatory messages poured in from across the political spectrum.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with cabinet colleagues and legislators, extended his greetings and expressed confidence in Jamatia’s leadership.

In a social media message, the Chief Minister said, "Heartiest congratulations to Shri Rampada Jamatia ji on his unanimous election as ‘Speaker’ of Tripura Legislative Assembly. Wishing him success in upholding the House’s dignity with wisdom, fairness & integrity."

The result was formally declared by Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul, who noted that the nomination received broad-based support from members of the House.

In keeping with parliamentary tradition, Jamatia was escorted to the Speaker’s chair by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy and other senior legislators.

The Deputy Speaker expressed optimism that Jamatia’s experience would help ensure smooth proceedings and uphold the decorum of the Assembly.
