With its lush green orchards producing some of the juiciest pineapples in the country, Tripura is setting its sights on global recognition for its flagship fruit. The state is now working on a comprehensive plan to position its Queen and Kew varieties of pineapples as premium exports in international markets.
In a key step toward this goal, a high-level meeting of the Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) was held on Thursday, chaired by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath participated via video conference, where a three-year roadmap for international branding and export promotion of Tripura pineapples was extensively discussed.
According to sources present at the meeting, the branding strategy will be executed in two distinct phases, combining technological mapping, aggressive marketing, and international tie-ups.
Phase One: Building the Foundation (First 21 Months)
The first leg of the plan will focus on data gathering and groundwork. This includes:
GIS mapping and ground-truthing to identify and chart productive pineapple-growing areas.
Conducting a baseline study and market research to evaluate global demand and identify suitable export markets.
Inviting FMCG giants to explore pineapple-based processing units within the state.
Designing a branding strategy, complete with a dedicated logo, to be promoted through digital, print, and social media campaigns.
Billboards and promotional materials will be strategically placed in airports, railway stations, and commercial hubs to attract both domestic and international attention.
Phase Two: Entering the Global Arena (From Month 22)
Once the groundwork is in place, the state will move to pilot-level exports of pineapples to international destinations. This phase will include:
Shipping trial consignments to assess global market response.
Forging partnerships with exporters and overseas buyers.
Monitoring outcomes and optimizing logistics for long-term exports.
A senior official associated with the project said that the initiative aims to leverage Tripura’s natural advantage in pineapple cultivation while ensuring that farmers benefit from higher market access and better pricing.
By integrating modern marketing with sustainable cultivation practices, the state government hopes to turn Tripura into a global pineapple powerhouse, driving economic growth and uplifting the agricultural sector.
