Tripura CM announces assistance for families affected by post-poll violence

Agartala, Apr 20: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring strict enforcement of the rule of law in the wake of post-poll violence incidents reported from different parts of the state.

Stressing that no one would be allowed to take the law into their hands, the Chief Minister said that the administration would adopt a zero-tolerance approach against those involved in violence and intimidation.

In a major relief initiative, Dr Saha announced financial support for families affected by the recent unrest.

A total amount of Rs 64.50 lakh has been sanctioned from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to provide assistance to 258 victim families in the first phase.

Sharing the decision through a social media post, the Chief Minister said the affected families were currently facing hardship and immediate support was necessary to help them recover from the damage and distress caused by the violence.

Taking a strong stance against those allegedly responsible, Dr Saha claimed that certain groups were repeatedly attempting to create fear in tribal areas to restrict political activities of other parties. He said such incidents have been witnessed after several elections in the past and warned that the government would not allow this “pattern” to continue.

The Chief Minister further stated that he would soon hold a high-level meeting with the Director General of Police, the Chief Secretary, and senior cabinet colleagues to review the situation and ensure effective steps to prevent further incidents.

Dr Saha made these remarks while interacting with media after visiting the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Hostel in Agartala, where several BJP workers affected by the violence have reportedly been staying for the past few days seeking safety and support.
