Tripura CM reviews proposed Water Supply Project for Agartala using Gomati River

Agartala, June 24: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today chaired a high-level review meeting at the TIFT War Room in Agartala to assess the proposed water supply system for the city based on water from the Gomati River.

Highlighting the need for long-term planning, the Chief Minister stated that the government must work in mission mode to develop a sustainable and comprehensive water resource management strategy for the entire state, keeping in mind not only Agartala's present needs but also future demand.

At the meeting, Secretary of the Good Governance Department Kiran Gitte presented a detailed overview of Agartala's current and projected drinking water requirements, existing limitations in the water supply system, and the proposed long-term project centered on the Gomati River.

He highlighted that a significant portion of the city's water supply currently depends on groundwater, making it necessary to establish a sustainable surface water-based source in view of population growth, urbanization, and recurring dry-season water shortages. The proposed plan includes water intake from the Maharani Barrage area in Udaipur, construction of pipeline, reservoirs, and water treatment infrastructure.

The Chief Minister reviewed the proposal in detail and stressed the importance of adopting a far-sighted approach to ensure adequate drinking water supply across the state.

He also called for measures to reduce water wastage, improve utilization of available water resources, and promote rainwater harvesting for use during periods of scarcity.

The Chief Minister remarked that perseverance and dedicated efforts can make the impossible possible and cited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an example of achieving significant results through vision and efficiency.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of creating a permanent Gomati River-based water supply system and excavating separate raw water reservoirs to store water during the dry season. Officials expressed confidence that such initiatives would strengthen uninterrupted drinking water supply in the future.

Among those present at the meeting were Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Rampada Jamatia, Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, MLA Abhishek Debroy, Secretary of Drinking Water & Sanitation Abhishek Singh, PWD Secretary P.K. Goyal, Chief Minister's OSD Parmananda Sarkar Banerjee, the CEO of Agartala Smart City Mission, and senior officials from various departments.
