Agartala, January 24 – Tripura has achieved a major milestone in its renewable energy journey by surpassing 7 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity generation under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Officials describe this as a historic step toward energy self-reliance and sustainable development in the state.
The 7 MW achievement comes from rooftop solar installations across Tripura, highlighting growing public participation in clean energy initiatives. More than a numerical target, the milestone reflects the state’s gradual shift toward renewable power and reduced dependence on conventional electricity sources.
The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) said the scheme provides households the dual benefit of reducing electricity bills and earning extra income by supplying surplus power to the grid. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the initiative aims to turn every household into a small power generation unit while promoting environmentally responsible energy use.
Public response in Tripura has been encouraging. Official data shows that 17,601 consumers have registered under the scheme, with 2,061 households completing solar panel installations and 1,746 beneficiaries receiving government subsidies. Under the program, consumers are eligible for subsidies up to ₹85,800, making rooftop solar financially accessible for middle- and lower-income families.
Energy experts note that even a 1-kilowatt solar plant can produce around 100 units per month, sufficient for most household needs, with excess electricity generating additional income. TSECL has provided technical support, awareness programs, and streamlined processes to ensure smooth installation and grid connectivity.
The state has set an ambitious target of expanding solar power capacity to 50 MW within the next year. Officials urge electricity consumers to register through the government website or nearest TSECL office, encouraging residents to convert their homes into mini power stations, reduce bills to zero, and create sustainable income.
Tripura’s growing solar capacity marks a decisive step toward a self-reliant, green, and sustainable energy future, benefiting both households and the environment.
