Agartala, May 22: To maintain a steady supply of essential commodities across Tripura during the rainy season, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Sushanta Chowdhury passed an instruction to officials concerned, sub-divisional administrations, and market associations to take proactive responsibility in ensuring uninterrupted distribution of essential commodities to consumers.
In a meeting held at the secretariat’s conference hall on Thursday, Chowdhury emphasized the importance of preparedness ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. He urged authorities to ensure that stockpiling and supply chains of essential items remain stable and sufficient during the rains.
The meeting was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) from various sub-divisions, officials from the Food department, and representatives from multiple market associations.
Chowdhury highlighted the temporary transportation challenges arising due to on-going repairs on a crucial bridge over the Barak River in Assam. This situation has forced goods-laden vehicles to take a detour, adding nearly 32 kilometers to their travel routes. Despite this, he assured that the current stock of essential items in the state is adequate.
He also issued a stern warning against black marketing or any unscrupulous trade practices during this period of logistical disruption. “If any such activities come to the attention of the Food department, strict action will be taken,” he warned.
To ensure stability, the minister also instructed all concerned officials and market stakeholders to remain vigilant and act swiftly where necessary.
Special Secretary of the Food department Debapriya Bardhan, Director Sumit Lodh, and SDMs of Sadar, Jirania, and Mohanpur sub-divisions were present at the meeting, along with several representatives from local market committees.
