Tripura Govt forms panel to probe girl student’s suicide

In response to the tragic death of a teenage girl student, the Tripura government has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to uncover the circumstances that led to the incident and ensure accountability.

The deceased, Trisha Majumder, a 16-year-old student of Sonapur Higher Secondary School in South Tripura’s Belonia, reportedly took her own life following an incident scolding by a school teacher. She was admitted to GBP Hospital, where she passed away on Sunday morning.

Taking serious note of the incident, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha directed the Education Department to initiate a formal investigation.

Acting promptly, the Directorate of Secondary Education formed a three-member fact-finding team on Tuesday to look into the matter.

The probe panel includes Lisa Bardhan, Joint Director of Elementary Education; Kajal Kumar Bhowmik, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Directorate of Secondary Education; and Sudip Sarkar, OSD in the office of the District Education Officer, West Tripura.

Initial inputs suggest that Trisha’s extreme step may have been linked to emotional distress caused by a teacher’s scolding, though the government has emphasized the need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation before drawing conclusions.

The committee has been tasked with examining the incident from all relevant angles, including possible lapses in student support systems at the school level. The team is expected to submit its findings by Wednesday.
