Tripura Govt to procure 21,315 MT paddy at MSP, vurtual meeting held

Agartala, Dec 2: In a significant step to bolster the rural economy, the Tripura government has announced its plan to procure 21,315 metric tonnes (MT) of paddy from local farmers during the Rabi season. Food Minister Sushanta Chowdhury revealed the details during a press briefing on Monday.

The procurement drive, set to begin on December 19 at the Madhavbari truck terminus, will offer farmers an increased Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs. 23 per kilogram. Minister Chowdhury emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring fair prices for agricultural produce and uplifting the livelihoods of farmers.

To streamline the process, 49 paddy procurement centers will be established across the state. The initiative follows a collaborative effort involving Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), Block Development Officers (BDOs), and officials from the Agriculture and Food Departments, with a preparatory virtual meeting chaired by Agriculture Minister Ratanlal Nath.

Since the BJP-led government assumed office in 2018, the state has procured over 2,07,859 MT of paddy, benefiting 1,08,127 farmers. This initiative has cost the state Rs. 405.88 crore, reflecting the government's dedication to supporting the agricultural community.

“Our aim is to double farmers’ income and strengthen the rural economy by ensuring fair prices for their produce,” Chowdhury stated.

Food Director Sumit Lodh and Agriculture Director Saradindu Das were also present at the press conference, underlining the government’s integrated approach to the initiative.

The announcement signals the government’s continued focus on agricultural reforms and its commitment to empowering local farmers through proactive measures.
