Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman visited Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University on Wednesday as part of a state-wide review to assess the status of higher education infrastructure and implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP).
A brief program was held at the academic building of the university to mark the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Barman said that after assuming charge of the Higher Education Department, a comprehensive review of the infrastructure and academic systems in colleges and universities across the state was undertaken.
As part of this initiative, field visits were planned to various higher education institutions to gain firsthand knowledge of their current condition.
The minister noted the historical significance of the university, stating, “Maharaja Bir Bikram University carries the name of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, who made remarkable contributions to the spread of education in the region.”
Highlighting the government's commitment, he said, “The vision is to elevate MBB University to the level of India’s premier educational institutions. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sincere efforts, the National Education Policy has been introduced, which focuses on making education more skill-oriented and flexible, allowing students to choose subjects based on their interests.”
He urged all stakeholders — faculty, staff, and students — to work together to ensure effective implementation of NEP in both colleges and universities.
“The progress of any society or nation depends on the advancement of education,” he added. “To achieve the goal of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat or Ek Tripura Shreshtha Tripura, special emphasis must be placed on educating the people.”
MBB University Registrar Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty also addressed the event, stating that efforts are underway to make MBB University one of the best in the Northeast. Vice Chancellor Dr. Bibhas Deb and Higher Education Director Animesh Debbarma also spoke at the event.
Before the event, Minister Barman visited the university campus, the under-construction open auditorium, and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) unit on site.
Speaking to reporters after the visit, he said the inspection aimed to evaluate whether the NEP is being implemented effectively and if any infrastructural challenges remain.
He affirmed that similar visits would be conducted to other colleges and universities in the state, followed by necessary administrative steps.
