Tripura Police arrests content creator on rape charge

Agartala, May 17: A youth known for creating social media content and running mobile phone shops in Agartala has been arrested after a girl accused him of sexual assault at a hotel near the city’s railway station.

The accused, identified as Aditya Das, was taken into custody by Amtali police during a late-night police operation following a complaint lodged by the survivor at the women’s police station in Agartala.

According to investigators, the girl alleged that she had become acquainted with the accused through social media several months ago. Their online communication reportedly continued regularly before the accused allegedly invited her to Agartala, promising expensive gifts, including iPhone.

Police sources said the girl arrived in the city on Saturday and later met the accused near Agartala Railway Station. She alleged that instead of taking her to the place initially discussed, the accused brought her to a nearby hotel where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The complainant further alleged that she was physically assaulted after resisting and that the accused later fled with her mobile phone while issuing threats.

Following the complaint, officers from the West Agartala Women Police Station launched an immediate search operation. A police team later detained the accused from one of his mobile phone outlets in the city before handing him over to Amtali Police Station for further legal action.

Investigators said the accused originally hails from Kamalpur and currently resides in Agartala. He reportedly operates two mobile phone shops in the city and is also active on social media platforms as a content creator.

Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to rape and criminal intimidation.

The accused was produced before a local court after his arrest on Sunday, while the investigation into the case is continuing.
