Agartala, May 27: In a move aimed at strengthening regional air connectivity, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha is spearheading efforts to revive the long-defunct Kailashahar Airport in Unakoti district.
A team of officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) met the Chief Minister on Tuesday to discuss the airport’s restoration, just a day after conducting an on-site survey to assess infrastructure requirements and feasibility.
The push for revival gained momentum following Dr. Saha’s recent meeting with Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in New Delhi, where he urged the central government to fast-track the project.
Earlier he also formally reached out to the Ministry of DoNER and Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan, highlighting the strategic importance of reactivating the airport.
AAI’s North Eastern Regional Executive Director M. Raja Kishore and MBB Airport Director K.C. Meena were part of the delegation that attended the high-level discussion on Tuesday.
The officials briefed the Chief Minister on the airport’s current status and outlined preliminary plans for its redevelopment.
Once operational, the airport is expected to promote tourism, and support economic activity in the region.
