With rising internet use across Tripura, police authorities have stepped up efforts to protect citizens from online fraud.

According to official records, the amount of cybercrime-related financial frauds reported in the state since 2021 stand at a total of Rs. 51.49 crore, Director General of Police Anurag said on Saturday.

He also said that Tripura Police through proper investigation and prompt action so far retrieved Rs 33, 84, 163.

The DGP, speaking at a workshop and awareness programme for journalists on cybercrime, urged the people to stay cautious while clicking on any suspicious links and sharing personal details on the internet.

He said, the awareness drives undertaken by the government and police are yielding good results. These campaigns, through social media, workshops, and community outreach, have helped people become more alert about the tactics used by digital fraudsters.

Speaking on the issue, the DGP urged citizens to adopt strict cyber safety practices in their daily lives.

The police also emphasized the importance of quick reporting in case of fraud. Victims have been instructed to immediately dial 1930—the national cybercrime helpline—to block fraudulent transactions without delay.

Additionally, he said, the people should promptly approach their local police station or the Agartala Cyber Crime Police Station to ensure that legal procedures are initiated swiftly.

The DGP said, cyber fraud is a growing menace, but timely precautions and awareness can prevent major losses.

Investigations have also led to the freezing of 20,387 bank accounts containing deposits worth Rs 5.76 crore, which authorities hope to retrieve in the coming months.
