Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy has called on the 16th Finance Commission to take into account the adverse impact of Bangladesh’s current political instability on the state's economy.
During a crucial meeting in New Delhi, organised by the Commission to deliberate on developmental concerns of North Eastern states, the Minister made a strong case for urgent financial support to address the emerging challenges.
While presenting a detailed roadmap for the state's development, he highlighted that Tripura’s economy and revenue generation are intricately linked to cross-border trade and exports with Bangladesh. However, he noted that the ongoing political turmoil in the neighbouring country has disrupted trade routes, negatively affecting key sectors such as economic growth and medical tourism in the state.
In this context, he urged the 16th Finance Commission to take a “sympathetic and strategic” view of Tripura’s growing revenue deficit and to extend adequate financial assistance that reflects both internal infrastructural challenges and external limitations beyond the state’s control.
The Finance Minister also emphasized the need for deploying additional forces along the international border to counter rising drug trafficking activities, which he described as another significant threat to socio-economic stability in the region.
Though multiple development demands were placed before the Commission—including a special infrastructure fund, sectoral grants for fisheries, agriculture, tourism, MSMEs, and 20% earmarked funds for forestry and ecology—the Finance Minister underlined that the cross-border dynamics with Bangladesh remain one of the most urgent policy challenges.
The proposals, as stated in a press note issued by the Finance Department, underscored Tripura’s efforts to frame its financial needs within a broader geopolitical and economic reality.
