Tripura’s education sector has earned national recognition with Ranjan Debnath, headmaster of PM SHRI Class XII Girls’ School in Sabroom, receiving the prestigious National Teachers’ Award for his contribution to education.
President Droupadi Murmu conferred the award on Debnath at a special Teachers’ Day ceremony in New Delhi, bringing recognition to both the educator and his institution in South Tripura.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha hailed the achievement of Debnath and said, “This national recognition of his dedication, contribution and exemplary leadership in the field of education has made the entire teaching community of Tripura proud. His achievement will inspire generations of students to come.”
Under Debnath’s leadership, the Sabroom girls’ school has expanded its focus beyond conventional classroom learning, strengthening academic performance while promoting technology, vocational education, sports, self-defence and other co-curricular activities.
Established in 1960, the institution has introduced a range of modern learning facilities, including smart classrooms, science laboratories, an Atal Tinkering Lab, skill and robotics laboratories, a virtual reality lab and vocational education programmes. The school also provides library facilities, sports coaching and self-defence training to its students.
Its academic performance has remained strong in recent years. The school achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in both secondary and higher secondary examinations in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic sessions. During 2024-25, it again recorded a 100 per cent pass rate at the secondary level, while the higher secondary pass percentage was 92 per cent.
Debnath has been credited with playing a key role in the institution’s development while overseeing the education of nearly 700 girl students with a limited teaching workforce. His approach has placed equal emphasis on academics, sports, cultural activities and students’ overall development.
The national award has sparked celebrations in Sabroom, with residents hailing the honour as a recognition of the dedication of teachers working to strengthen public education and create better opportunities for students across Tripura.
