The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress on Monday sought the intervention of the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) over alleged attacks and harassment faced by party leader Sahajahan Islam, his family members, and other residents of the minority community in the Masjid Patti area of Santipara in Agartala.
A delegation of Youth Congress leaders met THRC Chairman Justice Arindam Lodh and submitted a memorandum detailing their concerns.
The delegation alleged that on the night of June 8, a group of miscreants, allegedly backed by the ruling party, launched an attack on Sahajahan Islam’s residence.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a controversial Facebook Live session by the Youth Congress leader, during which he allegedly made derogatory comments targeting the Chief Minister, Tripura Police, and certain minority BJP leaders over a dispute regarding cow slaughter.
According to the complaint, the attackers vandalized property, damaged household items, and misbehaved with female family members during the assault.
The delegation also said the local police detained Sahajahan Islam’s elderly father and brother—both allegedly uninvolved in the incident. The two were subsequently remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
Speaking on the development, a source within the Youth Congress informed that the THRC advised the complainants to first approach the state’s law enforcement agencies for necessary protection before seeking further intervention from the Commission.
