Tripura's Gandacherra unrest: Vandalism, arson in houses, shops reported

Agartala, July 12: Tension ran high at Gandacherra sub-division in Tripura after violence erupted following death of a youth on Friday.

Despite deployment of adequate security forcws, the situation remained tense till the last information poured in.
The violence-- vandalism and arson in several houses and shops-- triggered panic among the local people. Some civilians and policemen also came under attack.
In the wake of the large-scale violence, the Dhalai district unit of Tripura Police imposed a prohibitory order and claimed 'the situation is under control'.
The police also made a general appeal to refrain from posting, sharing, expressing any communal sentiments. According to police, it will amount to an offence under BNS and IT Act, any deviation will be strictly dealt with.
It all began on July 7 last. During an event of Anandamela at 30 card area of Gandacherra, one youth- Parameswar Reang had a confrontation with some local people. The argument escalated, leading to the youth being chased and injured, with allegations of him being subjected to electric shock. In the aftermath, shops in the area were reportedly damaged.
Reang was hospitalized on the day of the incident but succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning following which an unrest prevailed in the sub-division. The tension escalated when the body was taken to the deceased's native village. 
The violence intensified, with numerous homes and shops in the 33 KB area, 30 card area, and Tislighat being attacked. Reports also indicated incidents of arson and attacks on policemen.
According to sources, despite the police being aware of the possibility of violence, there were insufficient security arrangements when the body arrived in Gandacherra. 
After a series of incidents, a sense of fear gripped the local people; many of them have reportedly taken shelter in nearby jungle.
