Agartala, July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday brought national attention to Tripura's rich indigenous cultural heritage by featuring the traditional musical instrument Chongpreng during the latest edition of his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat'.

Describing the bamboo-crafted instrument as a unique symbol of the state's tribal culture, the Prime Minister said the Chongpreng produces a distinctive melodious sound and reflects the artistic traditions of Tripura's Janajati communities.

Highlighting the importance of preserving indigenous art forms, Modi lauded the efforts of cultural enthusiast Surya Kumar Debbarma, who has been working tirelessly to revive the nearly forgotten instrument. 

He said Debbarma's commitment has helped introduce the Chongpreng to younger generations, ensuring that the traditional musical legacy continues to thrive.

The Prime Minister observed that while the instrument had gradually lost popularity over the years, dedicated individuals like Debbarma have played a vital role in restoring public interest and safeguarding this valuable cultural heritage.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the recognition accorded to the state's traditional art and culture at the national level. 

He said the mention of Chongpreng in 'Mann Ki Baat' is a matter of immense pride for Tripura and will inspire greater efforts towards preserving the state's indigenous traditions.

Dr. Saha joined local residents in listening to the Prime Minister's address at Booth No. 51 under the Pratapgarh.
