Tripura's veteran news editor Pradip Datta Bhowmik passes away

Pradip Dutta Bhowmik, a prominent figure in Tripura's media landscape, passed away on Sunday afternoon during treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He was 72.

Dutta Bhowmik, news editor of Dainik Sambad and a senior member of Agartala Press Club, had been undergoing treatment since April last and passed away at 3:50 PM on Sunday. His mortal remains will be brought back to Agartala on Monday around 3 pm.

He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, and a wide circle of relatives, colleagues, and admirers.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, several other leaders and Agartala Press Club expressed grief over Bhowmik’s death and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family. Tributes also poured in from political circle and members of the press fraternity.

Born on January 1, 1953, in Comilla (then part of East Pakistan), Pradip Dutta Bhowmik moved to Agartala where he completed his early education at Netaji Subhash Vidyaniketan. He later studied science at Agartala’s Bodhjung School before graduating with a B.Sc. from MBB College in 1973.

His foray into journalism began under the guidance of the late Bhupen Dutta Bhowmik, founder-editor of Dainik Sambad. Although he briefly work in teaching profession in the early 1980s, journalism soon became his full-time calling.

In 1988, he was assigned as News Editor of Dainik Sambad, eventually also assuming the responsibilities of printer and publisher by 1996—roles he held with dedication until his final days.

His legacy will live on in the newsroom and in the hearts of those he mentored.
