Tripura’s Gopal Das sets another record for Sun Gazing

Tripura’s Gopal Das has added yet another feather to his cap by securing a place in the prestigious Asia Book of Records for his exceptional feat of sun gazing without blinking for four continuous hours.

Das, a resident of Tebaria in Bishalgarh, has been practicing Surya Dhyan (meditation while gazing at the sun) for nearly three decades. Recognizing his achievement, the Asia Book of Records has conferred upon him the title of “Grand Master.”

According to the official citation, Gopal Das (born on January 5, 1972) of Tripura, India, is titled as Grand Master for meditating while looking at the sun constantly, without blinking the eyes, for four hours, as confirmed on February 27, 2025.

The record-setting event took place in Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh, where a monitoring team kept him under close observation throughout the attempt.

Expressing gratitude, Das said, “The people of Prayagraj extended immense support during the record. Their cooperation helped make this achievement possible.”

Despite the well-known risks of sun gazing, Das claimed, he has never experienced any eye issues.

“Even a short glare at the blazing sun can cause eye damage. But for me, it has been a divine blessing—I never faced any difficulty,” he said.

With both India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records under his belt, Das now aspires to enter the Guinness World Records.

Alongside, he raised demand for setting up a Surya Mandir (Temple of the Sun) in Tripura and called for government support.

He also proposed the creation of a museum to document the struggles and atrocities faced by Sanatanis in different parts of the country previously.

Emphasizing the significance of solar meditation, Das remarked, “Everyone needs Surya Dev’s blessings. Surya Pranam and Surya Dhyan are not just spiritual practices, but also pathways to good health and positive living."
