A disturbing incident at Tripura’s GBP Hospital has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals, after two doctors were allegedly assaulted by relatives of a patient during the early hours of Saturday.
The patient, identified as Bimal Sarkar, was brought to the hospital around 3 am after reportedly consuming poison mixed with alcohol. Doctors on duty promptly admitted him to the emergency ward and initiated treatment.
According to hospital sources, Dr Litan Das was the first to attend to the critical patient. However, tensions escalated soon after when the patient’s sons—Tapan Sarkar and Papan Sarkar—engaged in a heated exchange with the doctor. What began as a verbal altercation quickly turned physical, with Dr Das allegedly being assaulted by the duo.
When fellow doctors Dr Avik Deb and Dr Santanu Das tried to intervene, they too were reportedly subjected to verbal and physical abuse.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from the hospital’s emergency department. The doctors also criticized the inaction of the security personnel and the policemen posted at the hospital.
