Two TSR personnel shot dead by colleague in Tripura

Agartala, Dec 04: Two TSR personnel, who were posted at ONGC GCS, Konaban in Tripura's Sepahijala district, were shot dead by a colleague of the same unit on Saturday morning. The incident occurred at 9.30 am following an issue over sanction of leave.
The accused- Sukanta Das, a rifleman under 5th-Bn TSR, surrendered at Madhupur police station soon after opening fire at two senior colleagues- Mark Hasin Jamatia, 47, (Subedar) and Kiran Jamatia, 39, (Naib Subedar) from his service rifle.
While the Suvedar died on the spot, the other was shifted to Agartala Government Medical College in a serious condition. He succumbed to injuries later on. Das was arrested soon after he confessed the crime.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb paid homage to the deceased and announced that financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh would be provided to the bereaved families each. Besides, they would also get the benefits under the die-in-harness scheme.
Superintendent of Police, Sepahijala- Krishnendu Chakravertty interrogated the accused rifleman at Madhupur police station and also visited the place of occurrence. Inspector General (TSR) G.S. Rao along with DIG Soumitra Dhar also reached the spot.
The accused rifleman in his statement before police said that his leave was sanctioned but he was not relieved from duties rather he was asked for refresher training. It was then a hot altercation took place during which he had pulled the trigger of his service rifle firing at the two colleagues, police sources said.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister along with DGP V.S. Yadav visited the houses of Mark Hasin Jamatia and Kiran Jamatia at Pitra and Gokulpur. Earlier, they were present at 1st-Bn TSR headquarters, Gokulnagar when the two deceased were offered Salami with the last post of the Bugle.
