The Union Cabinet on Thursday reportedly approved the One Nation, One Election policy and is likely to table a comprehensive Bill on the same during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

In March this year, a High Level Committee headed by former President of India Ram Nath Kovind had batted for the idea of 'One Nation One Election', a proposal mooted by the Central government as per which elections to the Lok Sabha and the State legislative assemblies will be held simultaneously.

The panel in its report said that there is overwhelming support for holding simultaneous elections and that it will aid development and deepen democratic roots in the country.

While some of the Constitutional amendments needed to bring in simultaneous elections would require ratification by states, certain amendments can be done by Parliament without the states' concurrence, the report said.
