USTM’s Deeksharambh 2025-26 Inspires Young Minds

Khanapara, Sept 16: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) continued its Deeksharambh 2025-26 orientation program on its second day for undergraduate and postgraduate first-semester students, under the theme “Quality Teaching-Learning.” The event, held at the Central Auditorium, featured dynamic sessions by three eminent scientists who captivated the young audience with their insights and vision.
Opening with felicitations and warm welcomes, the program quickly transformed into an intellectually charged atmosphere as distinguished speakers addressed the students in three separate sessions.
Prof. Jagannath Ambagudia, Campus Director, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati, delivered an impactful talk on “Career Prospects in the Field of Science.” He underlined the indispensable role of the Social Sciences in a world increasingly influenced by Artificial Intelligence, remarking, “AI can never substitute human essentials—because at the end of the day, people need food.” Urging the students to take initiative, he added, “Get started—the idea can always be polished later. The most important step is the first one.”
In the second session, Prof. Sanniyasi Elumalai, Ph.D., University of Madras, delved into the enduring foundations of biotechnology and science. He challenged the overreliance on AI, describing it as a “bubble bound to burst.” He emphasized that while technology may evolve, the core principles of science remain constant, reiterating the primacy of science over technology.
The third session featured Prof. Virendra Mani Tiwari, Director, CSIR–NEIST, Jorhat, who spoke on “Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurial Skills.” Applauding USTM’s exemplary gender balance, he reflected on the significant presence of female students. Prof. Tiwari explored the deep interconnections between science, nature, and global challenges such as water scarcity, stressing the role of research in addressing real-world problems. He concluded with heartfelt advice, guiding students on how to make the most of their university years.
The day ended with reflections from Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM, who highlighted the Northeast as a biodiversity hotspot. He shared ongoing collaborations between NEIST and USTM in water management, agriculture, medicine, and entrepreneurship, encouraging students to embrace innovation and bold thinking.
The sessions left students motivated and inspired, envisioning a future where—with determination and hard work—they could become successful entrepreneurs and leaders.
USTM continues to shine as the only private university in Northeast India ranked in the NIRF for four consecutive years, including 2025. Established under the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya Act, 2008, USTM today stands as the largest educational network in the region, nurturing thousands of future leaders.
