Youth donates kidney to save childhood friend as GBP Hospital marks milestone

Agartala, Mar 31: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP hospital has witnessed an extraordinary humanitarian gesture and selfless act from a 33-year-old youth when he donated his kidney to save a childhood friend.

This human story was part of a milestone achieved by the hospital-- two successful kidney transplants on consecutive days. The first of the two procedures, performed on March 30, involved a 36-year-old patient from Kalsi, Baikhora in South Tripura district, who received a kidney from his childhood friend from the same locality. The gesture has drawn attention as a rare and selfless example of organ donation beyond family ties.

The following day, March 31, another transplant was successfully conducted on a 33-year-old patient from Champaknagar, with his 59-year-old father donating the organ. With this, the total number of successful kidney transplants in the hospital has increased to 7, commencing from on July 8, 2024.

Hospital authorities confirmed that both donors and recipients are stable and under close post-operative monitoring.

Officials stated that the back-to-back surgeries mark a significant advancement in Tripura’s healthcare capabilities, as such procedures were previously conducted individually over extended intervals. This is the first instance in the state where two back-to-back kidney transplants have been completed within a span of two days.

The transplants were carried out by a joint team of specialists from AGMC & GB Pant Hospital and Shija Hospital & Research Institute, supported by anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, and technicians.

The development evidently reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen advanced medical services in the state, with the kidney transplant programme steadily expanding since its inception in 2024, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who holds the Health portfolio.

From the Nephrology Department of AGMC & GBP Hospital, the team included Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das and Dr. Udayan Saha. From the Urology Department, the team included Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh and Dr. Jiban Debnath. The anaesthesiology team from AGMC & GBP Hospital included Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar, Dr. Tapan Debbarma and Dr. Jagruti Aich.

From Shija Hospital & Research Institute, the specialists involved were Dr. Saumyendra Paonam (Urologist & Transplant Surgeon), Dr. Maharavam Mahale (Urologist), Dr. Thow Dam Yashobanta Singh (Consultant Anaesthetist) and Dr. Thow Bram Chandis Singh (DNB Anaesthesia).

Other OT nurses, floor nurses, and OT technicians of GBP Hospital also assisted in the procedures. The entire process was supervised by Senior Nursing Officer Tapati Chakraborty.
