Dharmanagar, Oct 2: North Tripura district marked Gandhi Jayanti with a series of cleanliness, environmental and public awareness initiatives under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2026’ campaign, focusing on responsible waste management, source segregation and community participation.
A major highlight of the day was the launch of the ‘Swachhata Rath Yatra’, which was flagged off from the District Headquarters by District Magistrate and Collector, North Tripura- Chandni Chandran.
The awareness vehicle will travel across the district over the next week, taking the message of cleanliness and responsible waste management to different communities. A key focus of the campaign is creating awareness about the recent guidelines of the Supreme Court of India on four-way segregation of waste at source.
On its first day, the Rath reached Panisagar, where it was received by students, providing an encouraging start to the district-wide awareness campaign. Through interactions with citizens and communities, the initiative seeks to encourage people to segregate waste at source and adopt responsible practices for disposal and management of household waste.
The district’s ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ activities also carried an important environmental message. Following a cleanliness drive at Juri Jail Haat, officials of the District Administration, along with Civil Defence Volunteers, undertook a tree plantation programme on the premises. Alpine Pine saplings were planted as part of the initiative, reinforcing the connection between clean public spaces and greener surroundings.
Meanwhile, Trainee Volunteers of the District Administration, North Tripura, joined students of RCPE, Panisagar, in a cleanliness drive at the institution. Organised on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the programme highlighted the spirit of Shramdaan and the importance of collective action in maintaining a clean and healthy community.
The series of activities brought together government officials, volunteers and students, reflecting the campaign’s emphasis on community participation rather than cleanliness being viewed solely as an administrative responsibility.
The North Tripura district administration has appealed to citizens to actively participate in the campaign, practise waste segregation at source and contribute towards cleaner neighbourhoods and a healthier environment.
